Former Wolves nemesis Kevin Phillips, who scored 93 Premier League goals during his esteemed career, has been talking about the club’s model, describing how Sunderland can follow in their footsteps and rebuild in an interview with the Evening Times.
What’s he said?
Focusing on how League One club Sunderland can start rebuilding for the future, Phillips said that they should look at Wolves as an example.
He hailed their club model, speaking about how a club can build themselves back up after relegation trouble to become one of the best outfits in the Premier League.
Here’s what he told the Evening Times.
“I don’t live too far from Wolves and I’ve watched them closely and when they were relegated twice they got rid of a lot of dead wood and started rebuilding and look at them now.
“They could get to an FA Cup final and they’re sitting comfortably in the Premier League so they’ve learned from their mistakes.”
Phillips is spot on
Phillips has hit the nail on his head when it comes to his opinion of Wolves’ rebuilding period. In just two seasons they’ve risen from the Championship to seventh in the Premier League, and that in itself is a testament to how far they’ve come.
They’ve done things in a clever way, finding a talented manager capable of developing players and building a fantastic squad harmony.
It’s that squad morale and also the shifting of dead wood that has played such a large part in their success. There are probably only a few players left residing in the squad who are below the standard required to compete at the top level, which underlines the quality of their transfer activity in recent years.
The signings of players like Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio have enabled them to rebuild and their model is one a host of clubs in the Championship – and indeed those at the top of League One – should do their best to follow.
That, of course, is easier said than done but it’s a hugely appealing way to go about things.
