Liverpool have been on a remarkable roll in the transfer market over the last year or two, with major deals for players like Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson all contributing to help rebuild the Reds’ first team.
It’s no real surprise, then, that the Liverpool Echo have recently informed fans that they shouldn’t be expecting the same this summer. Indeed, as per the Liverpool Echo, Klopp is said to be happy with his team, and thus major signings aren’t expected.
The logic for that makes sense. After all, they can’t spend freely forever, and much of the squad is at a high level.
However, in reality, Liverpool simply can’t afford not to continue spending.
After all, it’s the spending that has got them to their current position. They’ve spent a lot of money, but they’ve certainly got good value out of their deals, with many of their big signings contributing to help Liverpool put forth a title challenge this season.
Take Alisson, or Virgil van Dijk, for example. If they hadn’t been signed, who knows where Liverpool would be now. So just imagine if the Reds bagged a talented attacking midfielder like Nabil Fekir, or an unstoppable defender like Matthijs de Ligt.
There are still a few weak spots in the team at Liverpool, particularly in defence and in the attack, and if Liverpool don’t improve those areas, they risk falling behind.
Particularly when you’ve got reports from ESPN indicating that City could be about to spend big on Saul Niguez, there’s certainly a chance that the Citizens could look to spend a lot of oney to increase the gap between them and Liverpool – and so the Reds can’t allow that to happen.
In the modern game, you can’t afford to rest upon your laurels. Teams must always be looking forward. Liverpool, then, must get back to spending big in pursuit of exactly that.
